Restoring community in a disconnected world. We are living in an unprecedented social experiment. Never have so many lived so far from extended family or outside of traditional communities, where adults serve as collective parents for neighborhood children. Never have so many marriages ended in divided families, or so many elderly been relegated to unfamiliar surroundings. These developments have reduced our social capital — the relationships that bind us together and create a sense of community. We must find ways to deal with this profound loss of social connectedness and the resulting loss of civility, diminished behavioral boundaries and increased crime. Restorative practices can perform a critical role by helping to restore community and foster relationships in an increasingly disconnected world
